What are terpenes?
Terpenes are a large group of organic compounds that are found naturally in insects, fruits, vegetables, and almost all plants, including cannabis. They are responsible for the plant's flavour and aroma characteristics. These compounds are produced in trichomes, the glands in plants that also produce cannabinoids such as CBD and THC. More than 20,000 different terpenes have been identified, of which around 200 have been detected in the cannabis plant.

Terpenes are also essential in many other plants, providing natural protection against bacteria, fungi, insects, and other environmental factors. Additionally, some terpenes attract pollinators, such as bees. In stressful situations, some plants release terpenes to defend themselves or to communicate with their environment. Insects, for their part, use terpenes to interact with each other and attract others to food sources.
Uses
Terpenes are the main active compounds in essential oils and are frequently used in aromatherapy due to their easy absorption through the skin. It is believed that certain aromas can have a positive impact on our emotional state, promote creativity or induce a feeling of relaxation. These aromatic compounds are not only found in natural foods, but also in cosmetic products. In addition, terpenes possess antimicrobial properties that can prevent the proliferation of bacteria, making them excellent natural preservatives for food.
Furthermore, when different terpenes are combined, it is possible to recreate a wide range of flavours. Manufacturers, aware of this potential, are increasingly innovative in incorporating these aromatic compounds into various products, with the aim of replicating or even improving the terpene profiles present in cannabis flowers or cannabinoid oils.
